"SECOND REALITY OF IAKOV CHRNIKHOV’S FANTASIES" PROGRAM

Many Iakov Chernikhov’s compositions have become the basis for their realization in various forms. The 3D models from wood, metal and Plexiglas have been made on the basis of computer reconstruction enabling the architectural and graphical images to be transformed into the design and mockup drawings.

The students of the Lyons school of fine arts (France) and Royal College of architecture in London (Great Britain) for the first time made attempts at reproducing Iakov Chernikhov’s compositions in the mockups made from soft materials (foam plastic, cardboard). Details…

For the traveling international exhibition of facsimile copies "Iakov Chernikhov. Fundamentals of modern architecture" Andrey Chernikhov architecture and Design Studio made 3D models from wood, glass, cardboard and plastic. Architects Dmitry Blagodatskikh, Marianna Brovchenko, Alexei Kim and Mikhail Migunov were the authors of projects.

At George Heinz studio (Strasbourg, France, 1991) the field of modeling Iakov Chernikhov’s graphic images was expanded by using radio components as the basic parts of a 3D mockup.
The 3D models from metal on the basis of Iakov Chernikhov’s images were made together with the gallery of Alex Lakhman (Cologne, Germany) and displayed at the exhibition "Iakov Chernikhov’s architectural fantasies" arranged by the gallery in 1997.

In 2002 the Iakov Chernikhov International Foundation started implementing the international program of virtualization of Iakov Chernikhov’s images - "The second reality".

It was the 1920s when Iakov Chernikhov stated that “in the 20th century graphics will become the major language of civilization”. That idea articulated basically at the time when N. Wiener generated his cybernetic concept predicted subsequent development of computer graphics. Becoming in his interpretation an independent field of architectural creation, the architectural graphics was at the same time for him the means of expression and composing of new forms. The principle of combinatorics typical for Iakov Chernikhov’s compositions laid foundation for their transfer to virtual space. Thus and so, Iakov Chernikhov’s fantasies became a “second reality” that was originally implied.

The animation enabled the new generation of young architects to study the heritage of the Russian avant-garde not only theoretically, but also by means of its creative understanding. The similar computer method for preserving the creative heritage of the great architectural master has become unusually urgent now, when it was possible to virtualize Iakov Chernikhov’s fantasies owing to the new technologies.

As a part of the program opened in 2002, the Russian and Bulgarian centers are working at creation of 3D computer models on the basis of graphic images drawn by I. Chernikhov. The Bulgarian center prepared about 10 computer models, the Russian center created about 20 models and 10 animations. Several best models were shown at the exhibition "Iakov Chernikhov’s architectural fantasies. 101 compositions" displayed in December 2001 at the Tretyakov gallery. Details…

In 2004 the Foundation organized a competition of best animations of a work by Iakov Chernikhov included in the program of the international Ukrainian architectural competition “Sozidaniye”, as a result of which  5 best works have been selected to be included into the animated film. Details…

The Foundation has worked out the new concept of the exhibition of the architectural master’s works "Iakov Chernikhov’s architectural fantasies. The second reality". The exhibition will unite the academic retrospective of the genuine Iakov Chernikhov’s works, their embodiment in the form of 3D models and computer animations. The exhibition is aimed at showing Iakov Chernikhov’s graphic fantasies and their correlation with three-dimensional implementation of the master’s images in the virtual space. In addition to the genuine Iakov Chernikhov’s works and mockups from metal, wood, foam cardboard and plastic created on the basis of his compositions, a multimedia film will be demonstrated in the exposition hall.
